Close to 40 neighbours of i pro- posed new subdivision at the former Seaforth Public School on Market Street packed the council chambers last Tuesday. Their concerns about the proposed housing that could include triplexes and quadriplexes, adequate drainage, access off of Highway 8 and increased traffic in the quiet neighbourhood had developer Brian Barnim threatening to put in a trailer park instead. "All I'm hearing are the negatives. If push comes to shove, it could be a trailer park - then we wouldn't have to rezone," said Barnim. Huron County planner Carol Leeming said after the meeting that CF zoning would not allow a trailer park. MacLellan pointed out that it might be hard asking a developer to put up 100 -year-old houses. Several neighbours bemoaned the loss of recreational land saying the empty space is now being used by playing children and as a place to walk dogs and jog. "Who needs construction - nobody really wants it," said one woman. Arva contractor Jack Vanderweg who bought the school when it went to public auction in 2003 responded that the land is private property. "I have been kind enough to allow people on it and I've put up with a lot. Kids have done a lot of damage to the school - they've destroyed it inside. I didn't buy it to have it as a public walk place," he said. John Lansink expressed concern about drainage, asking for a storm water management pond adding that his base- ment fills with water during every storm. "Water sew- ers are now at capacity and can- not handle addi- tional storm water from the proposed devel- opment," he said in a letter to council. Lansink also told council that he believes access to Highway 8 is necessary because of the traffic caused by 32 new housing units in the neighbourhood. He added that Sparling Street is not wide enough to handle the increased traffic. Ho •ver, Thomas ey expresse cern that access to Highway 8 beside his Goderich Street driveway will make it even more difficult for him to back out of his driveway.
