-Fire
destroys
350 straw
bales
Damages are
estimated at $10,000
when 350 large straw
bales were destroyed
by fire on Aug. 10 at
approximately 11:30
p.m. on Maple Line,
just west of Bridge
Road in Huron East.
The bales, piled a
number of layers, were
along the roadside
away from any
buildings and
passersby called to
report the fire.
Seaforth fire
department's deputy
chief Jim Sills says
firefighters wet down
the surrounding area
so the fire would not
spread but could do
nothing to put out the
bales.
"These kinds of fires
have to burn
themselves out. It's
probably still
smouldering," he said
Monday.
Huron OPP are
asking that anyone
with related
information about the
fire call them or Crime
Stoppers.

It's been 'a summer of
firsts for 15 -year-old
Robyn Doig, of Seaforth -
it's the first time she's
competed in the Ontario
junior girls' golf
championship and the
first time she's competed
in the Canadian junior
girls' golf championships.
Doig finished 62nd out
of 120 girls in the
nationals at London's
Sunningdale Golf Course
last week after qualifying
at the provincials in Port
Elgin several weeks ago.
"Some girls I golf with
mentioned the
provincials and my dad is
friends with the guys at
Piper's Glen in Port Elgin
so I decided to sign up,"
says Doig. "I just wanted
to see how I'd do against
other girls across the
province!'
The daughter of Linda
and Cam Doig, co-owner
of the Seaforth Golf Club,
Robyn golfs every day
and has been competing
in the Tyson tour for the
past two years.
The four days of golfing
during the nationals last
week made up the
longest tournament Doig
has ever golfed and she
says she learned a lot
from it.
"There were a lot of
things I know I could
have done better. I know
my chipping and putting
need to improve and I
want to work hard on
that now. I also need to
work on getting
everything to come
together at the same
Mike Hensen Sun Media photo time," she says.
Robyn Doig, 15 of Seaforth tees off last Wednesday morning during her Doig says during the
second round of the Canadian National Junior Girls championship.
first two days of the
tournament, she could
get the ball to the green
in the regulation number
of shots but would then
putt a number of times
and not make par.
"It was really
frustrating," she says,
adding that her putting
was so bad she decided to
buy a new putter and use
it on the last day of
competition.
"I decided it wouldn't
have made a difference
trying something new
and I putted better on
the last day," she says.
But, on that last day,
Doig says she didn't drive
the ball as well, becoming
victim to "a lot of unlucky
bounces."
After Thursday, Doig
had to be within the top
48 to move on to the final
championship round of
golf, on Friday, something
she failed to do this year.
But since she's 15, Doig
says she has three more
years to compete in the
junior girls'
championships, which
are for golfers aged 14-
18.
"I still have a lot of
time to try and get
better," she says.
Since the top four girls
in each province form the
provincial team and
compete wherever the
nationals are held in the
country, Doig's goal is
now to try and join that
team during the next
three years.
"The 17 and 18-year-
olds could shoot really
low scores so it was just
fun to go into the
tournament and get some
experience," she says.
