Page 18 The Huron Expositor • August 8, 2007 News Blyth play about folk artist Maud Lewis is heartbreaking Aaron J a c k l i n The Blyth Festival's World Without Shadows is as sad as itis touching. Directed by Gil Garratt and written by Lance Woolaver, the play's about real life folk artist Maud Lewis and her husband Ev, played by Anne Anglin and Randy Hughson. They live in a shack in Nova Scotia, cleverly depicted on stage in a way that makes their poverty obvious from the start. Most of the stage is taken up by the shack itself, while the remaining space is the area around the structure and includes a tree. Two walls are neces- sarily missing from the shack to let the audience see in, but this also visually reinforces how useless the walls are at keeping the cold out. Maud paints on pieces of wooden board - and sometimes cardboard - in the shack and Ev sells them. The world referred to in the play's title isn't just the world depicted in Maud's paintings. It's also the world as she sees it. 'The judge' - who is well played by Robert B. Kennedy - narrates the story, adding a sense of tragedy to the whole thing because he knows what's going to happen in the end and from the first line in the first scene, the audience can tell that it won't be cheerful.
