After a season of nine wins and one tie, the St. Columban under -15 girls' soccer team's coach Teresa Finlayson said it wasn't a big sur- prise winning the championship. But, she was glad that during the final game, the St. Columban girls _had to fight hard for it. She said the championship game against Clinton was a great game for spectators since a 1-1 tie after regulation play sent the girls into two more five minute halves, ending in a penalty shoot-out, which St. Columban won. "The wins had come easily all sea- son so it was fun to win in such a close and exciting game. It makes it all the more worthy," she said. Finlayson was full of praise for the U15 girls, saying they were all very skilled athletes even though they were playing together on an all -girls' team for the first time after playing on mixed teams so far. "They were all so unselfish with the ball that we didn't have to count on the same person to score all our goals. It was a really balanced team that was easy to coach because they all came to play," she said. During the finals, St. Columban beat Bayfield, Blyth and Goderich before winning the championship game against Clinton. Finlayson said the team also won a fun tournament earlier in the sea- son in Exeter. Cronin said that while the team only lost two games all season, St. Columban lost to Goderich in the championship game. "We lost to Goderich during the season too so we thought they might be a tough team to beat," said Cronin. A second St. Columban boys' U15 soccer team, coached by Andre Gras didn't make it into the finals.
