Dave Colbourne records first gospel album

Dave Colbourne did not grow up
singing in a church choir.
But, he's been hooked on gospel
music since attending a concert
with a friend close to 12 years
ago and he recently released a
CD full of gospel music he sings
himself.
"I always liked country and
western music but southern gospel
music just touched me and gave
me the ability to sing. It was the
message of God's love," he says.
Colbourne, who's lived in
Seaforth since 1988, had been
singing in the congregation of
Bethel Bible Church when he
began to work up his nerve to
become a soloist.
"It was so much easier singing
with the congregation than turn-
ing around and facing them. But,
my calling was stronger than my
shyness," he says.
He adds that when he began
singing to the congregation, "peo-
ple might have thought I was
playing the drums too but it was
just may knees knocking."
After several years of singing at
a number of local churches and
nursing homes, Colbourne is
beginnning to consider himself a
"musical minister" since his gospel
songs get listeners ready to hear
the word of God.
"I'm not an entertainer. It's more
about getting the message to the
people and open their hearts," he
says.
Colbourne says the best way to
get rid of his nerves while singing
to an audience is to remember
that he's really singing to express
his faith.
"I had to realize who I was
singing for and focus on who I'm
singing about and everything
calms down. It's like prayer," he
says.
Though he still works full-time
at a factory in Stratford,
Colbourne is hoping to someday be
able to sing as a fulltirme career.
"I had always wanted to record
my music but the timing wasn't
right," he says.
But, when he started taking gui-
tar lessons at Schinbein Music in
Mitchell, Colbourne realized he
could book the Schinbein record-
ing studio, which he did this past
spring.
Called Mercy Rewrote My Life,
the CD contains 14 selections of
gospel songs. While he didn't write
any of the songs he recorded,
Colbourne says that's his next
goal.

He plans to send the
CD to country and
Christian radio stations
throughout Ontario in
hopes of receiving some
airplay. After that, he
plans to try the 100s of
Christian radio stations
in the U.S.
"I hope they'll like
what they hear. I'm step-
ping out in faith but I
know I've got to do the
legwork - you have to let
people know you're out
there," he says.
Colbourne says one of
his biggest fans is his
12 -year-old son Michael,
who has also become a
fan of gospel music.
"He's more nervous
than I am when I sing.
Gospel music is very
emotional. It becomes
personal when you like
the words of the song,"
he says.
Colbourne says he's
ready to sing "at any
church in the area and is
selling his CDs at
Radiant Life bookstore in
Goderich, Music in
Sebringville, the Gospel
Lighthouse in Stratford
and from his home in
Seaforth.
