New camp will teach kids about running a band
Susan •H u n d e r t m a r k
Egmondville's Kim Souch is offer-
ing a music camp this summer for
young musicians interested in loiiarn-
ing the ins and outs of playing in a
band.
Band jam camp will be held Aug.
20-23 for musicians 12 and up with a
good grounding in music who want a
chance to learn about lighting and
sound, writing music, promotion and
anything else associated with playing
in a band.
"There's a lot of glamour associated
with bands but there's also a lot of
work - lugging around amps, dealing
with dusty stages and cords, doing
promotion and marketing," says
Souch, who plays in two bands -
Detour and Cactus Jam - throughout
Southwestern Ontario.
Souch is hoping to split a minimum
of 12 students into two bands, who
will travel between the Lager House
stage and Starlight Bowling Lanes.
On'the stage, they will learn about
sound, stage set-up, lighting, using a
microphone and singing in front of an
audience.
At the bowling alley, students will
learn about song writing, building a
repertoire of songs and promotion,
including putting together a public
relations' kit.
"The camp should give them a
glimpse of what it's like and see if
they really want to start a band," she
says.
"Some people are in musical fami-
lies where they have lots of mentors
and exposure to music but not every-
one does," says Souch, adding the
camp is designed to do that sort of
mentoring.
She says the camp will also cover
information about how to find places
to play and bookings.
"There is so much talent locally but
there isn't as much opportunity to
perform," she says.
For musicians used to playing
alone, Souch says they can learn a lot
in a group.
"You have to learn the whole song
in a band and learn your instrument
more fully. Plus, a band adds a lot
more excitement to it - it's more of a
show," she says.
Souch says the camp will also give
young musicians a glimpse at mak-
ing a career out of music, touching on
musicians' associations, agencies and
other resources for musicians.
"This will give them a starting
point," she says.
The Egmondville music teacher is
currently turning her part-time busi-
ness into a full-time venture and the
band jam camp is element of that.
Along with her guitar and drum
students, Souch hopes to expand the
business to offer music lessons to
seniors, offer workshops throughout
the year on song writing and bring in
