Huron Expositor, 2007-08-01, Page 3News Dashwood, Mt. Carmel reeling from deaths Cheryl Heath The tight -knit communities of Dashwood and Mount Carmel are reeling from the shooting deaths of two of their awn on July 22. John Becker, a Municipality of Bluewater councillor, rural -route mail delivery man and long-time volunteer for the Dashwood fire ser- vice, says few area residents can begin to comprehend the senseless- ness of the act, which claimed two longtime community residents and boosters, William and Helene Regier. Sadly, notes Becker, this is not the first time tragedy has cast its pall over the Regiers. In 1976, Helene's own mother was claimed in a house fire on the same property William and Helene Regier came to call home. The community's response to the fire was instant, notes Becker, who recalls volunteer firefighters pooled their resources in order to purchase a tanker truck so that type of inci- dent would never happen again. "Those things never leave you," says Becker. Today, Becker says, some area res- idents are second-guessing them- selves and wondering if more could've been done to prevent the double murder, which occurred west to the region where the OPP were conducting a manhunt for Windsorite Jesse Imeson, who was beiing sought in connection to the murder of Windsorite Carlos Rivera. Becker says Bill was supposed to pick up his brother, Monday morn- ing, to go the doctor's. When Bill didn't arrive, a relative checked the Regier home and found the couple. Police were then called. "The whole community is just shell shocked," says Becker, who adds a rural -route mail delivery man, he has occasionally found him- self calling in suspicious vehicles to police, but he didn't spot anything out of the ordinary during his regu- lar duties. Becker notes the Regiers were well respected and'active members of the community, where they were especially involved in fundraising at their home church in Mount Carmel, which is currently undergo- ing renovations. Becker says many people in the area didn't know about the man- hunt on the July 20-22 weekend, which left a lot of people feeling ner- vous. He adds since then, police have been active in attempting to find- Imeson, nd"Imeson, who could be in the area, long gone, or hiding out in one of the area's abandoned farm houses "right under their noses." "It's a real shock to the neighbour- hood," says Becker. "We will have to learn to endure it." Becker is hoping Imeson is caught so the Regier family and the com- munity can begin the long process of healing. He adds there are residents lock- ing their doors for the first time. "You don't know who is out there any more," he says. Renewed funding lets library offer free Internet training With renewed funding from the Community Access Program (CAP), the Seaforth branch of the Huron County Library is again offering free Internet training. Laura Mero has been hired as a CAP youth intern for Seaforth branch to help people enhance their computer and Internet skills, and even teach them how to make a web site, if interested. "I am delighted that the federal government has decided to continue to fund this important service," said Beth Ross, county librarian. "The use of the internet computers at our libraries has continued to grow every year, and people need to improve their skills to keep up with the fast -paced changes of the Internet." In addition to basic computer and Internet skills, the CAP youth interns can teach people how to participate in online activities such as blogs, wikis, photo sharing and other social networking. Training sessions are conducted on a -one-on-one basis, with some special events also taking place. You can learn how to start your own blog, build your own website, partici- pate in online live chatting or anything you might want to learn about using a computer or searching the Internet. Interested learnets can make an appointment by calling Seaforth Library at 519-527-1430. This Internet training is also available at all branches of the Huron County Library. -.. st o:a The Huron Expositor • August 1, 2007 Page 3 COntario's Furniture Viiiage CIVIC HOLIDAY WEEKEND LvT LIQUIDATION August 2 to August 6, 2007 Thursday August 2 (9-6) sAvE 30% Friday August 3 (9-9) SAVE 4O% Saturday August 4 (9-6) Sunday August 5 (12-4) SAVECJOrnCivic Holiday Monday August 6 (9-6) Hundreds of pieces of furniture and accessories will be liquidated over 5 days at greater discounts each day! y FREE 1111,111.1i1 • 1,11-11111 11Ill .11nii.: www.ontariosfurniturevillage.com GG GIVE LER oOubm FTNE FURNITURE Carronhroolc I urnihire; 62 Mill Street, Dublin Halfway between Stratford and Goderich on Highway # 8 519-345-2250 1-800-265 6584 alp DEW available Generous financing available SATISFACTION GUARANTEED The Gric Holiday Promotion excludes all other promotions and offers.
