"If there's an empty spot, it goes there. I'm forever moving plants but a lot of gardeners do that," she says. "It takes me longer to weed because I always see plants I want to save and transplant," she says. With gardens bordering every prop- erty line and building and ringing every tree, Mary says she's not allowed to dig up any more lawn for gardens. But, she doesn't let that stop her. When she feels the itch to start a new garden, her lucky nextdoor neighbours have been approached to have gardens dug on their property. "They always say, 'Go ahead. You do the work and we'll enjoy the flowers,'" she says. Mary says she usually spends every day from 7-9 a.m. in the garden and every evening. Because they both love birds, the Van Loons have planted Mulberry and Saskatoon berry bushes specifi- cally for the birds along with coral bells and other red flowers specifical- ly for hummingbirds. While they still work hard in their garden, the Van Loons enjoy taking time either with a book or just enjoy- ing the birdsong in the beauty they've created. "John has finally learned to relax a bit. The garden taught him," she says. 42. Deaths 42.
