Architect looks to make Brussels library
accessible while retaining historical character
Aaron J a c k l i n

Huron County architect John
Rutledge has been given 30 days to
look at the Brussels library, accord-
ing to Clerk -Administrator Jack
McLachlan.
"He wanted to take a look and see
if he could make the present library
accessible and meet the criteria of
the county without changing the
historical character of the building,"
said McLachlan.
The. 30 days started the week
before last.
"In the meantime, we're probably
going to take a tour of some of the
other libraries that have been built
in the last three or four years," said
McLachlan, noting that putting up
a new building seems to be the
direction Huron East council is
going to go.
Under such a plan, the present
Brussels library would be rented
out or sold.
The Heritage Advisory Committee
is working to get the library desig-
nated a historical building.
It's the biggest project on their
agenda, according committee chair
Charles Hoy.
"It's a nice Carnegie building,"
said Hoy.

"We've got a
lot of good infor-
mation on both
the architecture
side of the
building plus the history," said Hoy.
"The people who were involved were
pretty significant, not just to this
area, but to the county. There
should be no issues with getting it
designated."
Hoy explained that a man named
John Leckie was originally responsi-
ble for bringing the Carnegie
libraries to the area.
"We don't want to see the facade
get to the point where you just don't
•recognize the building anymore."
Hoy is in the process of having his
own house in Brussels - which
•Leckie built and lived in - designat-
ed a historical building too.
Hoy said one of the reasons
they're going through that process
is to educate people. He said people
seem to have 'a phobia about desig-
nating buildings or properties

where they think if they designate,
then that means they can't do any-
thing to the property.
"One of the reasons we're going
through with the designation of my
house now is we're planning a num-
ber of renovations .down the road,"
he said, explaining they want to
show people what they can still do
even after designating their house.
"Then people will say, `Look, his
house is designated, but he's still
able to do stuff,'" he said. "People
just don't realize that it doesn't
mean you can't do anything with
your house."
He said there are guidelines that
must be followed when people do
something with their historically
designated buildings, but that they
aren't as stringent as what people
think.
