MedQuest
reinforces
desire for
medical
careers
Susan Hundertmark
A week of exploration of various
healthcare professions - including the
chance to stitch up wounded stuffed
animals and put casts on each other -
has' reinforced a number of MedQuest
campers' desire to become doctors.
And, even those high school students
who still aren't sure after participating
in MedQuest's second year in Seaforth
say they've been able to cross a few
possible future careers off their lists.
"It seemed that med school was so far
fetched and far away. But, the
counsellors were so awesome and we
got so much information that it made it
a more realistic dream," said Emily
Ennett, of Stratford.
"I was thinking medicine and I still
want to be a GP. But, only after this
camp would I consider coming back to
the area as a doctor - before I wanted
to get as far away as possible," said
Michaela MacGinty, of Goderich.
The weeklong camp, organized by
Healthkick Huron in conjunction with
the Schulich School of Medicine and
Dentistry, brought three first year
Western medical students to Seaforth
as camp counsellors for close to 30
Huron and Perth Grades 10 and 11
students.
The students spent the week
suturing stuffed animals, giving
injections to oranges, learning to set
casts and splints, watching a simulated
birth, participating in a mock disaster
and job shadowing various healthcare
profegsionals in the area.
Camp counsellor Marvin Chum, of
Toronto, said he was impressed by how
involved the students were during the
five long intensive days.
"I think we generated a lot of interest
and curiosity to get out and learn
about the opportunities available," he
