Brodhagen says goodbye to 'The Shed'
Structure to be demolished after nearly 70 years
Hilary Long
For generations, people
from Brodhagen and the sur-
rounding area have come to
skate in the shed across from
St. Peter's Lutheran Church.
On July 7, members of the
cotegation gathered to say
their final goodbyes to the
structure, affectionately
known as "The Shed". A deco-
rating party was held and
many members came to paint
and spray paint final words
and pictures on the building
they have enjoyed for so long.
The shed, the second on the
property, was originally built
for horses in 1941. Pastor
Steve Johnston said when
people stopped taking horses
to church, the shed was con-
verted into a hockey rink.
For the first time, in 1951,
asphalt was .put down and
the shed was flooded for skat-
ing. "It was always open for
the whole community to use,"
..'he said.
Teams from around the
area would come to play on
the natural ice. Johnston said
generations of families have
skated and learned to skate
in the Brodhagen shed. He
said that about 80 per cent of
his congregation at St. Peter's
has used the ice rink.
But in February the church
voted to close the shed
because repairing the roof

"Buildings are not people,
but they still hold memories
and treasured moments," said
Johnston, adding, "Goodbyes
can sometimes be hard, even
if it is just an old drive shed."
"We are losing our out-
reach, not just for the church
community, but for the broad-
er community," said
Johnston. He noted the
church has formed an out-
reach committee to look at
what outreach will become for
St. Peter's and Brodhagen.
Demolition of the shed has
not yet been scheduled but is
likely to happen sometime
this summer.
