With nearly 30 players involved in
two teams, youth hardball has •
returned to Clinton.
"We've been shut down for seven
or eight years; but interest is start-
ing to grow again," said Bob Miller
(a.k.a. Doc), coach of Clinton's new
mosquito team.
"In the past Clinton was very
active and won many all -Ontario
baseball championships in junior
and senior divisions. It's a cycle."
Rob Vader and Randy
Lammerant, of Seaforth, have
joined Miller on the bench as coach-
es for the mosquitoes, which as of
early last week, had a record of
seven wins and one loss.
Lammerant says his three boys
wanted to play hardball because
they see it played on television by
the major league teams.
"It's a different game (from fast -
ball). And, it's a harder game to play
but my boys like it," he says.
Lammerant says he was
approached at a year-end fastball
tournament by "a guy from Clinton"
about helping to start up fastball
again in the town.
"I think the interest is back," he
says.
While he could've taken on more,
Miller said the current mosquito
roster features 15 players ages 10
and 11, from the Clinton -area. Four
players travel from Seaforth.
The team usually plays one game
and holds one practice each week.
Home games are played on
Wednesdays.
Coached by Randy Marriay, Ian
Peck and Bryan Watson, the rookie
ball team also has 15 players. As a
beginner team - ages six through
nine - the rookies use a pitching
machine.
"A few of our kids were playing in
Holmesvilie and wanted something
a little more competitive and this
definitely is," Marriage said.
"With the ball moving at 40-45
miles an hour it's quite a feat for
some of the kids to hit the ball."
Both Miller and Marriage credited
their team's successful beginnings
to ongoing support from parents
and the community.
The teams play within the
Western Ontario Baseball
Association, facing teams from
Exeter, Goderich, Mitchell, St.
Marys, Listowel, Lucan and
Parkhill.
Seasons beginning early May and
continue through until the second
week of August. Both Clinton teams

will be playing their year-end tour-

Because they aren't old enough to
play on the hardball diamond, the
rookies and mosquitoes play on the
diamonds at the Fish and Game and
raceway.
Central Huron facilities manager
Steve Campbell said no bookings
have been made at the hardball dia-
mond and regular maintenance will
continue until it can be used.
"This the best
way to get
things started
up again,"
Campbell said.

"It's a beautiful
diamond, one of
the best in
Huron County.
We're hoping to
make changes to
make it a junior
diamond rather
than senior,"
