Lions Pool team swimming towards prat
coaches hope will be thirdsuccessful year
Susan H u n d e r t m a r k
The Seaforth swim team gath-
ered on July 4, for its first prac-
tice together.
This year the team consists of
about 4.7 kids aged six to 17, a
number that's down by close to
10 swimmers from last year.
The last two years have seen
the team, with the biggest team
in the competition, win the final
meet and Ashley Marion, a
coach for three years, smiles as
she expresses her excitement at
the prospect of a third consecu-
tive title.
But, Julie Phillips, who also
coaches the Seaforth swim team,
says she's thinking Seaforth
might see some increased com-
petition from teams in Lucan -
where the team is growing every
year - and Stratford, which used
to win the title regularly.
"Stratford might be coming to
get the trophy back, but we
won't know until we start going
to meets," she says.
Phillips says Seaforth still has
a_good chance to win.
"A lot of our swimmers have
improved and you get more
points if you finish the race
higher," she says.
Size is an important element
in winning the meets since
every swimmer would competes
contributes points towards the
team.
Phillips says the Seaforth
team often
grows as the
summer pro-
gresses and
while the team
has lost a few
swimmers, it's
gaining new
swimmers.
"We've been
trying to
encourage all
the new kids to
come out and
try a meet. If
they like it,
they can join
the team," she
says.
The four
coaches - Julie
and Jenny
Phillips,
Ashley Marion
and Meagan
Carnochan -
encourage kids,
even less expe-
rienced swim-
mers, to come
out and swim
with the team.
"You don't
have to make
every one of
the practices to
join the team.
As long as you can make it to a
few practices and make the
meets on -the weekend, that's
good," says Phillips.
