funding to provide loans to start up businesses
Cheryl Heath
GMEMEZEMEND
Huron County council is throwing
its weight behind a request by the
Huron Business Development
Corporation (HBDC) for a letter of
support.
The HBDC is currently attempt-
ing to access more federal dollars in
order to be able to grant more loans
to start up businesses in the county.
Coun. Joe Seili (Huron East) says
though there is a lot of interest in
HBDC loans, no money is available.
Sign points to 2008
Council learned a subcommittee is
looking into developing new tourism
signage for 2008.
The issue reared its head last
month when Coun. Ken Oke (South
Huron) expressed concern with the
state of disrepair evident in much of
the county's tourism signage.

County residents willing to ante
up for a septic -tank inspection are

of 50 per cent of the cost.
Council approved the $15,000 pro-
ject, which will see interested par-
ties partner with the Huron County
Health Unit that, in turn, will moni-
tor the pumpout and track any sub-
sequent changes.
"It's another step on the road to
mandatory inspection," says
Warden Deb Shewfelt.
The money for the project is being
allocated from the Clean Water
Project funding.
- County council was told those who
have had a pumpout in the past
three years are not eligible for a
retroactive grant. In addition, septic
systems must be at least 10 years of
.age to qualify. The average septic
pumpout cost is $150.
On the road
Coun. Bernie MacLellan (Huron
East) questioned whether it was
wise to acquiesce to an Ontario
Good Roads' Association request to
forward pertinent information
about the county's assets.
MacLellan says he is concerned
the info could end up in a "lbronto
paper."
County Warden Deb Shewfelt
notes the information falls under
the public realm.
Council was also told one-quarter
of the 400 -plus municipalities asked
to send in the data have already
done so.
Chief Administrative Officer
Larry Adams says the info will like-
ly be used by the government for
research purposes during the grant -
allocation process.
In support
The county is throwing its support
behind a Huron County Health Unit
request to encourage the province to
cover the cost of vaccination for
Human Papillomavirus (HPV),
which is a member of a group of
DNA viruses in the genus
Papillomavirus that can cause
changes in cells leading to abnormal
tissue growth, as well as increase
the chances of developing certain
types of cancer.
Kudos
The county, including Social
Services department manager
David Overboe, paid kudos to chil-
dren's services manager, Evy
McDonagh, and her staff for their
continued excellence In providing
innovative programming for county
children.
McDonagh told council there are a
number of new plans in the works
including a collaborative one with
Perth County for a Well Baby pro-
gram, that will offer free develop-
ment screening to every baby at age
18 months in order to implement
early intervention measures where
necessary.
