Two local women trying to revive Dublin day
camp this summer at Lions Club pavillion
Aaron J a c k t i n
Dublin -area children have some-
thing new to do this summer, with a
day camp opening last week at the
Lion's Club pavillion.
The camp was started
by two local women,
Sarah Van Loon and
Lori Van. Bakel.
Van Bakel said the
camp had been around
15 to 20 years ago, but
not since then.
"We thought we'd try
and bring it back," she
said.
Van Loon and Van Bakel have
both just finished their second year
of study at Wilfrid Laurier in
Brantford and Brock University
respectively.
"We're both going through to be
teachers," said Van Bakel.
So far, they have 45 kids signed up
throughout the summer. They wel-
come drop -ins, but prefer 24 hours'
notice.
Van Bakel said the majority of
campers are from Dublin, with some
from Seaforth and some
from Mitchell.
"It's for ages four to
11," she said.
They'd originally
planned to run from 9
a.m. to 4 p.m., but are
willing to extend those
hours to accommodate
parents who work.
"We're going to have
games, crafts, sports,
days and summer fun," she

said.
While this will be Van Bakel's first
time as a camp counsellor, Van Loon
ran the library camp in Mitchell
last year.
Wednesdays and Fridays will be
water days throughout the summer,
with the remaining three days
revolving around whatever theme
they have that week.
Van Bakel said they pian to have
themes ranging from holidays to an
Amazing Race -type competition.
She said the Lion's Club seemed to
jump at the chance to get people
back into Dublin.
"It's all through the Lion's Club,"
she said. "We had to get approval
from them."
The camp runs until Aug. 24.

ter, contact Sarah Van Loon at 519-
