"My gas one that I had broke down, but I didn't like it anyway," he says. While rare ill the Seaforth area, Dunbar is part of a broader Canadian trend of peo- ple opting to use manual mowers rather than the usual gas guzzling mod- els. He found a manual mower at Canadian Tire on sale. "I went out and picked it up and I've been using it evir since." Dunbar, who had used a manual mower at his grandfather's place in the past, prefers the cut the manual mowers give. "I would say the cut is more even," he says. "It doesn't split the grass." Dunbar says that sometimes, when a gas mowers blades get damaged, they'll actually split the grass. He says the manual mowers, because they use a five blade Aaron Jacklin photo Blake Dunbar uses his manual lawn mower at his Seaforth home. "It doesn't split the grass and therefore saves a lot of burning," he says. "That's why I like it," he says. "If you use the gas mower, what I find is it kind of beats the grass up. It almost yanks it up like a dull razor blade would on your face." The environment was also on Dunbar's mind, with smog and the fumes that come with gas mowers a particular concern. "It doesn't help the air at all," he says. "You get the hot, smoggy days, and at least I can still go out and cut my grass without worrying about hurting the envi- ronment." Aside from Dunbar, there doesn't seem to be very much demand for manual mowers in the area, according to local hard- ware store owners. "Last year somebody ordered one in special, but I don't think we've had any orders this year," says Jim Sills, owner of Sills Home Hardware in Seaforth. Sills says he doesn't think he's even heard anybody mention them this year. "We don't have much demand for the electric ones either," he says, noting that he does have a couple electric mowers in stock now, having expected that people would be thinking about air pol- lution. "It hasn't really caught on, I guess," he says. "Either that or their old one hasn't died out." Sills says they have five manu- al models in their catalogue. The electric ones are cordless models that owners can charge. In Mitchell, Ken Faust of Faust Home Hardware is seeing some- thing similar. "We haven't had a big demand this year," he says, noting they do have a push model in stock. "We didn't sell any of the man- ual type last year," he says. "People are still buying the gas - powered ones. The electric ones aren't big sellers at all." The nice weather is now here and you're in the garden and planting crops.
