Rugby played mostly for the love of the sport

where the team found a sponsor
with the Anchor Pub and a field at
F.E. Madill Secondary School.
Ryan Clancy, a player/coach with
the Anchormen and teacher at St.
Anne's, also taught and coached
most of the former St. Anne's rugby
players.
He says as part of the school rugby
team, they toured England and
Wales together in 2003 and
Scotland, Wales and England in
2006. As well, the rugby players
competed at the OFSAA level twice
in high school.
"The men's team really is
about extending the game
beyond high school. During the
last couple of years we've been
growing and developing the
club," says Clancy.
The fact that F.E. Madill has had a
rugby program a little loner than
St. Anne's, and has also competed at
the OFSAA level, also helps with the
recruitment of players.
A number of the men's team play-
ers are playing rugby on a universi-
ty team "but most are men who want
to continue to play rugby for the love
of the sport," says Clancy.
While the men's team began
playing exhibition games, it joined
a Southwest Region league in 2003
playing teams from Kincardine,
Stratford, Walkerton and
Chatham.
But, when Chatham joined the
Niagara Rugby Union and
Walkerton folded its team, Stratford
and the former Clinton team - now
the Wingham Anchormen - followed
into the NRU.
"It's a higher division and some of
the games are quite difficult. It's
more travel but
we get to play
more games," says
Clancy.

SHEILA COPPS REMEMBERS THE CARS IN HER LIFE
By Bill Sherk "The Old Car Detective"
On a recent visit to Ottawa, I interviewed Sheila Copps - actor, writer, and
former politician. We talked about the cars in her life.
"The first car I rode in was a 1957 Plymouth with huge tailfins. My father,
Vic Copps, bought it new when I was five years old. We lived in Hamilton,
Ontario, and that Plymouth was the first car he ever owned.
"My father taught me how to drive on our family car. It was an automatic
and I think it was a Chrysler New Yorker.
"I learned to drive a stick -shift on my first car, a 1972 Volkswagen Baja
Special. I bought it in 1974. I was starting a new job in Ottawa so I needed a
car.
"I bought it on a Friday, drove it to a wedding on Saturday, and headed off
to Ottawa on Sunday. I drove there by myself in the pouring rain, a wind-
shield wiper fell off, and there I was, trying to figure out how to down -shift.
"I owned it for six years and wish I had kept it! I sold it to buy an Audi Fox,
which kept breaking down and parts were hard to get.
"My next car was a rysler K -car and it was the only new car I ever pur-
chased. I bought it in H Ilton and I kept it for about six or seven years. It's
a tradition in our family o drive a car into the ground. My mother is still driv-
ing the car she bought ew in 1993.
"When I became a cabinet minister, we were supplied with a government
car and we could choose between a Nissan and a Ford Crown Victoria. I
decided not to pick the Nissan because I thought that would be un -Canadian
so I picked the Crown Vic.
"Austin Thorne and I got married in 1994, and when we began dating, he
said he would pick me up in his 'Vet. 'That's interesting,' I said, thinking it
was a Corvette. It turned out to be a Chevette. But he did have a sailboat!
"After we got married, we bought a Dodge Caravan. We did the 'van thing'
for the next ten years, when my daughter was growing up and his son
Stephen was living with us. The van was great at election time because you
could carry all your signs in it.
"I had always wanted a sports car, and when I left politics, my husband
and I bought a Mazda Miata and absolutely loved it!"
"But in this age of SW's, other drivers don't see you. I was on my way to
a meeting in Toronto when another car clipped me and I did a complete 360
on the highway. Luckily, I walked away with no injuries.
"Then my sister was celebrating her 5oth birthday in Hamilton. We were
going through Oshawa when some guy changed lanes without looking and hit
us. The Miata was a write-off but we walked away without a scratch. I decid-
ed it just wasn't worth having a sports car so now we're driving a Chrysler
Sebring. That would make my dad happy. He was always a Chrysler guy."
