Klassen and Jankowski to leave high school
Jordan Baker
Principal Herb Klassen and vim -principal
Sheila Jankowski are saying goodbye to
CHSS.
Klassen came to the school four years ago,
the same time Jankowski came back to the
school, this time as an administrator:
Jankowski started at the school as an
English teacher and says, "I loved teaching
English."
She came back to Clinton when the vice-
principal at the time wanted to switch with
her, as she was working as vice-principal 'of
Mitchell's high school She says it was great
for her as she got to go back to Clinton,
which was doses:
Jankowski says one of the best parts of
her job is to see students, who in gr. 9 are
having problems, mature and grow in their
four years of high school to become better
students.
What she wants the students to have
learned from her
over the past four
year is to take
responsibility for
their actions and
hopes that she is
held by her students
as consistent and
fair.
Jankowski says
she loves it when she
sees staff take lead-
ership roles and
grow professionally
but if she has taught
the staff anything,
she wants them to

understand, Were here for the students."
She feels students respond best to a cars`
ing atmosphere. "Students don't care how
much you know, until they know how much
you care," reads a poster in her office. 'That's
my philosophy," she says.
Jankowski is retiring at the end of the
semester, at the age of 57 and after 35 years
in education, including a three-year stint
teaching in Malaysia and a total of 14 years
working at CHSS, both as a teacher and
through administration.
She says shell miss the staff and students
in particular but also the fast pace and the
mental challenges ofherjob.
"I'm going to read voraciously," she
declares as her first act upon retirement
Then she has travel plans to go down
under to Australia and New Zealand, as
well as going around the world for a second
time.
Klassen recalls when he first came to
CHSS, there were some things in the school
that were in bad shape. He came in asking
the question: "What do we need to dol'
The refaced gym came as a result of staff
and student fundraising of $50,000, and
more than $1 million spent by the board.
The tennis court was also redone the first
year Klassen was
principal.
He says, "Little
things like that
make it a better
school."
Over the four
years Klassen has
been principal he

Of Jankowski, Klassen says four years as
her colleague has taught him empathy and
patience toward students and to work the
hardest with the students• who are most dif-

"She's been very good for the school," he
adds.
Klassen remembers back to some of the
more difficult times at the school and feels
they have only made the school staunger.
