"This is a brand new project. We're
very excited. We think it's a great
idea," says Dolmage, adding that
GPS readings are being taken of the
eight Seaforth-area chestnut trees
to allow organizers to collect the
chestnuts and continue to cross-pol-
linate trees.

hunters help to reintroduce endangered
chestnut trees on Seaforth-area land
Mitchell.
The reason the turkey federation
has become involved is that chest-
nuts are traditionally food for wild
turkeys, which Dolmage says have
become quite common in the area,
thanks to the reintroduction of
turkeys into the wild by the NWTF.
"Twenty years ago, there were no
turkeys in Ontario at all but there
are 200,000 birds now. It was a very
successful reintroduction program,"
says Dolmage.

move them or cut them down later.
The seedlings require weed con-
trol, protection from deer, rabbits
and rodents and watering.
"They can be planted near a house
to improve the level of care but need
to be in a location where wildlife
(especially turkeys) can still benefit
from the seed," says an information
sheet from Mike Malhoit, of the
MNR's Huron -Perth office.
Ken Papple, who is one of the two
area landowners to plant the
American chestnut trees, says he's
glad to have them on his land.
"I think it's really great. I didn't
know they could grow in this area,"
says Papple, adding Dolmage asked
him because "he knew I was inter-
ested in trees."
As the chestnut program gets
going, Dolmage is also distributing
small oak trees throughout the area
for a similar reason - turkeys also
like to eat acorns.
For the Huron -Perth NWTF chap-
ter's banquet this year, Dolmage
collected acorns from a Tuckersmith
bush and from a friend in North
Bay, sprouted them and planted
them, setting 600 trees at each
place setting foil- the hunters to take
home and plant.
"I had trays upon trays of trees at
my house," he says.
Dolmage hopes to do the same
thing again next year through the
school system in Huron and Perth,
distributing acorns to the schools
and encouraging students to sprout
them and plant the trees at home.
