"Only four girls from Ontario get to go," says Natalie Cronin, Chyenne's mom. Chyenne competes in the Ontario High School Rodeo Association (OHSRA) in the Wrangler Junior High division. The OHSRA is a part of the National High School Rodeo Association, which is made up of 12,500 members from five Canadian provinces, 39 U.S. states and Australia. "Only four from each area go," Natalie says. "It's quite a competi- tion." "I at least got third place," she says. Her mom says, "She's very aggressive." Chyenne com- petes in four events. "There's bar- rels," she says, "where there are three barrels and you go around them in a clover- leaf pattern." In pole bend- ing, Chyenne explains there's a line of poles that you weave through and then race straight back. In goat tying, she says, "You jump off the horse and tie the goat, which is very fun, but dangerous." The last one is the break away. "You come out of a chute and rope a calf," she says. When asked which her favourite is, Chyenne initially says barrels and goat tying, but after another moment's thought decides she likes them all. "They're all fun," she says. "I like competing." Natalie - who competes herself - says it's perfect from a parent's per- spective. "They don't win money. They win scholarships," she says. Competitors can't cash in the scholarships; they must use them for school. "If their grades go down, the asso- ciation kicks them out," she says."If they get in trouble within school or outside of school, in the community, they're kicked out."
