She vied for the title for a number of reasons, and seems to have been better for it. Ten months later, after having served as the Huron County Plowmen's Association ambassador at a number of events, there seems to be little, if any, lingering bashful- ness. "I've gained a confidence in myself that I never thought I could have," the former GDCI student said recently. "I have been able to set goals for myself, and now I know I can reach them. I'm more outgoing. I can make up speeches; it doesn't bother me to talk to people." For a woman <i Fill up your empty spots or make a new flower bed. Kernighan will compete to become Ontario's Queen of the Furrow in September at t h e International Plowing Match (IPM) in Leeds - Grenville. Win or lose, Kernighan's reign as Huron County Queen will soon end, as her successor will be named at the HCPM on Aug. 24. "Huron County has some of the highest number of participants in the Queen of the Furrow com- petition," Kernighan said. "Last year we only had five, but the year before we had nine, and a lot of the other coun- ties... have to beg one girl to Mallory Kernighan practises her plowing Match in Leeds -Grenville in September. do it. We always have a big competi- tion, so it's something we're very proud of." Prospective queens complete interviews with judges, give a pre- pared speech, then give an impromptu speech built around an object they pull out of a bag. They are also judged on their skills as plowpersons. This competition may be the HCPM's main attraction this year, but it will not be the only, one. The match celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2007, and organizers are hoping to make it something special. About 50 plowpersons are expect- ed to be on hand, competing in about 15 classes. A special class, reserved for 17 of the county's most notable plowers, is being organized in honour of the late Paul Betties, a long-time The Optometrists and staff of Huron Optometric Centres are pleased to announce the RELOCA710N of the Clinton Office to 90 Albert Street, Clinton (corner of Albert & Princess) effective duly 9, 2007. This select group will be composed of competitors who have won the IPM scholarship or went on to rep- resent Huron at the Canadian Plowing Match. "I'm very proud of the young peo- ple of Huron County because I don't think there's a county across the province who can say they've had 17 people win the scholarship," said, George Zbwnsend, a director for this year's HCPM. "The HCPM will also feature a barbecue, silent auction, antique tractor showcase and a number of other displays. Girls aged 12-15 can compete in the Princess Competition, which is intended to prepare them for the Queen of the Furrow competition. There will likely be a fair bit of royalty on hand, as all previous queens have been invited back to celebrate the HCPM's 80th year. Though nobody knows who will take the title next, Kernighan can attest that the experience has life - changing potential. Ask her, and she'll tell you: she's not shy anymore. Not at all. The HCPM will take place at the farm of Bob and Carol Leeming and family (41802 Front Road, Huron East).
