Diane Ryan, of Vanastra, and her 11 -member team Selsa Supports raised .$13,029 in memory of the late Sandra McLachlan, of Seaforth and the late Elsie Farrell, of Goderich. Selsa stands for "Sandra, Elsie, Lives with us, Support shows strength, Among Us," a slogan which was displayed on the team t - shirts. Ryan organized a team to partici- pate in Relay for Life three years ago, the year after McLachlan died of skin cancer. "I met Sam (Sandra) in 1974 after moving here from Nova Scotia and we were best friends ever since," says Ryan, adding the two worked at CAP Products in Vanastra together. "I had no family here other than my husband and kids and Sam's family became my family," she says. The team raised $150 in the sale of luminary candles and Ryan says lighting the candles at 10 p.m. in front of the team's tent was "very emotional." "It made me think of the closeness and friendship we had for so long. It really hit home that she's not here and how much I wish she still was," says Ryan, adding she also lost her mom and dad to cancer recently. Ryan says the team also partici- pated in Farrell's honour since her daughter and Farrell's daughter were best friends. Seven of the team members work at E.D. Smith in Seaforth, which was expected to match the $2,762 raised by the team. "I was originally going to enter a team last year but she (her mom) got so sick around that time that I didn't. She would have thought it was a good idea (to participate in Relay for Life)," says Simonsen. The Disney Mates team dressed as Disney characters, particularly wasn't as large as usual but that she managed to find some new recruits after losing a few who moved away. "This is a cause that will always be important to me," says Lee, a cancer survivor. She says she enjoyed the wonder- ful weather, the survivor's lap and viewing all the luminary candles in the dark. "It was all good, every bit of it. It makes me really appreciate that I'm still here with my little boy and the rest of my family," she says. The Huron County Relay for Life had raised more than $84,500 this year. In five years, the Huron County event has raised $530,000. "It's a huge accomplishment.
