JUNE IS
Long-term
care facilities:
support, monitoring,
services, respite, etc.
At some point, we have to accept that our aging parent can no longer live
at home without daily assistance. Fortunately, there are long-term care
facilities that offer care and lodging services. People usually reside
permanently in these facilities, which provide a secure and protective
environment that specializes in the care of adults who have lost their
autonomy. They do not replace a resident's family and home, they are
simply acting as a resource. Their mission consists of offering temporary or
permanent residential services, assistance, support, monitoring, as well as
psychosocial, nursing, pharmaceutical, medical, and readaptation services.
These services are offered to adults, mainly elderly people, who have lost
their functional or cognitive autonomy and can no longer live in their
normal home setting.
S
Long-term care facilities generally accommodate people for a long period.
However, temporary arrangements are sometimes possible. Depending on
the region, some centers also offer respite care services, for a pre-
determined period, to regular care providers who have assumed the
responsibility of a dependent adult living in their home. The respite periods
can vary from a few days to a few weeks. Some centers also offer temporary
assistance to people who have lost their autonomy because of a crisis
situation, a disruption in their network of regular caregivers, or, in
unforeseen situations, to grant some time for the regular caregivers to
assume the responsibility for a dependent person in their home. Temporary
residential care services also allow a dependent person to recuperate
progressively, after an illness, a trauma, or a medical intervention.
