Push for provincial legislation banning cosmetic
use of pesticides not supported by Huron East
Susan H u n d e r t m a r k
While two councillors spoke in
favour of a resolution to ask the
province to ban the cosmetic use of
pesticides, Huron East council
defeated the motion at its June 5
meeting.
"I think it's pollution
myself," said Seaforth
Coun. Bob Fisher.
"We're shitting in our
own nest more and
more and we should do
what we can to stop
that."
McKillop Coun. Bill
Siemon said it's "astro-
nomical" how many
chemicals are inside
human bodies.
"We have weeders
you just step on and
they're very good exer-
cise," he added.
Acknowledging "there are health
concerns," Tuckersmith Coun. Larry
McGrath still spoke against the
ban.
"This could be a thin edge of the
wedge to stopping farmers from
using pesticides and that's what
scares me so I'm voting against it,"
said Brussels Coun. David Blaney.
Clerk -Administrator Jack
McLachlan pointed out that the res-
olution does not affect farmers.
The resolution from the Township
of Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield asks
municipalities to join it in request-
ing a province -wide ban on cosmetic
pesticides.
"Although many municipalities
Canada have now passed
bylaws and many more
are considering
bylaws, Quebec is the
first province to have
taken the lead on this
issue by controlling,
phasing in and then
banning a whole list
of cosmetic use pesti-
cides from the mar-
ket," says the resolu-
tion.
"Just as with smok-
ing bylaws, which also
dealt with a health
issue, municipalities
led the way with local
bylaws but the situation became
more uniform, fair and easier to
enforce for all residents and busi-
nesses when the province took up
the cause and passed legislation,"
said the resolution.
Smith-Ennismore-Lakefie1d
became the 22nd municipality in
Ontario and 127th in Canada by
adopting a bylaw to restrict the cos-
metic use of pesticides for non-agri-
cultural lands in April.

Three stars and a smiley face
were sent on a letter to Huron East
council recently when Dolly
McQuaid, of Seaforth, thanked the
public works crew for its clean-up
efforts after a recent storm.
"What a wonderful town of
Seaforth we have! I'd like to thank
the `hydro crew' who came and got
me all fixed up after our wind
storm. Also, the `clean-up crew' who
did such a good job of cleaning up
the large tree, limbs and branches,"
said McQuaid's letter.
"It was so clean, you'd never know
anything happened. You're all good
men and we are all proud of you and
love you a lot," said the letter.
