Council topay of lawn club repair
Susan H u n d e r t rna r kfees are only $60 since most members are
seniors.
As well, he said the club bought needed new
equipment recently and is trying to stay on a
budget.
Council agreed to spend $1,874 towards the
new roof with the money coming out of the park-
land reserves.
Repairs to the roof at the Seaforth Lawn
Bowling Club will receive half of the necessary
funding from Huron East council.
Neil Beuerman, draw master at the club and a
representative of the property committee, told
council at its June 5 meeting that the $3,633.73
in repairs were necessary to fix leaks that
required immediate attention.
Since the building is owned by the town of
Seaforth, the club decided to approach the town
for the cost, which the club viewed as a capital
improvement.
"We've tried to maintain the club to look good
but things have degenerated over the years,"
said Beuerman.
He said the repairs, which included reshingling
and installing new roof vents, have stopped the
leaks and will improve the appearance of the
building.
While membership had been dwindling, the
club has "rebounded" and membership has dou-
bled in size over the past two years, said
Beuerman adding the total membership current-
ly is 24.
As well, 600 people go through the club each
year in tournament play and members come
from as far away as Mitchell and Brussels since
the Brussels lawn bowling club folded.
McKillop Coun. Bill Siemon asked
Beuerman why the club didn't consider the
roof repairs as maintenance.
"Are you willing to go part way on it?
That's what I'm used to with clubs," he
said.
Grey Coun. Alvin McLellan added that
council is receptive to partnerships with
community groups.
Beuerman said the club does fundraising
during the year with tournaments, dances
and barbecues but added that membership
