Seaforth's `singer man' Mike Francis planning
family karaoke night at Victoria Park Aug. 4
Susan Ilundertmark
Since the first time Mike Francis
got up in a Vancouver bar to sing
karaoke 10 years ago, the Seaforth
man was hooked.
He's been looking for every oppor-
tunity to sing ever since.
That's why he's planning a family
karaoke night at Seaforth's Victoria
Park on Aug. 4 from 5-9 p.m.
"Somebody told me the town is
hoping to get more activity going at
Victoria Park's bandshell so I'll give
this a try and see if it works out," he
says.
Francis went to Huron East coun-
cil for permission and looking for
some help to set up a PA system for
the bandshell.
He also went door to door to area
merchants asking for "a few bucks"
and now he says the PA system is
covered.

Now, he's
hoping that any-
one who wants to
sing and to listen
will come out
that night and
participate.
"To me, it's
just fun. Singing
is now my pas-
sion," he says,
adding that he'll
sing on the PA
system at work
at E.D. Smith for

now a thing of the past.
"Every time I sing, it gets easier,"
he says, addng that many of his
friends and co-workers are now call-
ing him "The Singer Man."
He's invited all of the contestants
at the recent Seaforth Idol contest
to the karaoke night and is spread-
ing the word among his friends at
work.
But, if no one shows up, he's quite
willing to sing the whole four hours
himself.
"I have enough songs. I'll sing all
day," he says.
He's hoping to keep the karaoke
night as a family night, with guitar
accompaniment only since full
bands could get too loud.
As well, he says he'd welcome
anyone who does comedy to perform
as well between songs but the jokes
need to be "just clean stuff' keeping
to the family theme.
He's hoping for good weather and
a good crowd and is already plan-
ning a few more karaoke nights for
summer if August's event is a suc-
cess.
"I'm not looking for profit - just a
chance to let everybody sing," he
says
