Facebook is like a building full of friends' offices
From Page 4
simply touching their name.
If it's your office, you can go inside
and when there you can look at one
board that is constantly being
updated with the latest thing your
friends have done while in the
building (notes they've written,
groups they've joined, photos

they've posted and more). If you
want, you can go directly to their
door - without even leaving your
office - to get a better look.
There's a desk where you can
write notes and put together photo
albums to post on your door. If you
want, you can even write a personal
letter that will be delivered instant-
ly to,a friend's office. You can also
receive personal messages.
Now, if all of that worries you
because the people in this office
building don't care about privacy,
the next feature is the one to pay
attention to.
The building knows who you are.
If the owner of an office hasn't
said you can see what's on the door,
you can only see a tiny picture of
their face and name.
Nothing else.
In fact, if the other person only
wants you to see certain kinds of
information and not others, you'll
see what they want you to and won't
see what -they don't.
There's much more to it, but if you
replace the magic with technology
and put this building on the
Internet, you've got a basic idea of
what Facebook is.
Next week, I'll tackle what you
need to know to really understand
Facebook: the generation that uses
it.

After the eighth woman in her
family was diagnosed with breast
cancer, Nancy Denham, of Seaforth,
decided to join her cousins in a drag-
on boat race in Peterborough on
June 15.
While she's
not suffering from the
disease herself,
Denham says
that with her
grandmother,
mother, mother-
in-law, two great
aunts, cousin,
her mom's cousin
and now her
cousin's wife all
victims of breast
cancer, she feels
at risk.

Caring is our reason for being
ry," says
Denham. "But,
you hope not and
you do every-
thing you're sup-
posed to (to pre-
vent the disease
or receive an
early diagnosis)."
Denham and
four cousins are rowing a dragon
boat in Peterborough's upcoming
Dragon Boat Festival to support
Denham's cousin's wife Kerry while
she's receiving chemotherapy. The
four cousins are Kerry's sisters-in-
law
One of the rowing sisters-in-law
Joanne, who lives in Kincardine,
was diagnosed five years ago with
breast cancer and is now cancer -
free.
Kerry, who lives in Oshawa, will
be racing in another dragon boat
event in Toronto the same weekend.
A widow, she's also the mother of
two teenage daughters.
Denham says she's never been on
a dragon boat before but is training
for the experience.
"It's a real adventure. I'm not sure
I know what I've gotten myself
into," she laughs.
Training at Rob's Gym since
February, Denham recently modi-
fied her work-out to build more
upper body strength for the dragon
boat race.
"I only found out I was going to do
the race in April," she says.
Denham has already collected
$200 in pledges but is looking for
more.
Anyone who wants to sponsor
Denham can call her at 519-527-
