Health Minister George Smitherman presents an innovation award to the Huron
Family Health Team and Healthkick Huron, which was accepted last week by
Healthkick manager Laura Overholt and Gwen Devereaux.

province."
"It deals with a key issue in
health human resources," he says,
adding that the shortage of health-
care professionals is an important
issue facing everyone.
Gwen Devereaux, who along with
Paul Nichol of the Huron Business
Development Corporation, wrote the
proposal" for both Healthkick and
the Huron FHT, says she's "pretty
excited" by the recognition being
received for the project.
"I don't think there's anything
comparable across the province," she
says of the way Healthkick is target -
ting both high school and
college/university students and
encouraging them to chose health-
care professions and return home to
rural areas to work.
"It could be years before the pay-
off but it will create more stability
in the longterm," she says.
The three-year six -pronged Skills
for Healthcare Attraction and
Retention Pilot (SHARP) project,
which was renamed Healthkick,
received $300,000 in provincial
funding as well as a contribution of
$150, 000 from the Seaforth
Community Development Trust.
Accepting the award from Health
Minister George Smitherman with
Healthkick project manager Laura
Overholt in Toronto on Thursday,
Devereaux says she thinks the
Huron project won because of the
broad range of people - from high
school students on up - it's seeking
to interest in healthcare professions.
Devereaux says Huron -Bruce
MPP Carol Mitchell deserves some
credit for helping with the launch-
ing of the Healthkick project.
"We had her support going in.
Healthcare in Huron has been a big
concern of hers," says Devereaux.
With the program's funding com-
ing to an end this fall, Devereaux is
in the process of creating an appli-
cation to keep the project going.
"This summer will be very busy
since we'll be writing the business
proposal to go forward," says
Devereaux, adding that she's meet-
ing with Smitherman to discuss
ideas.
"It's just onward and upward with
this project. We can't lose such a
great program as Healthkick and
this award will absolutely help with
more funding," she says.
While the Huron FHT is still in
the process of finding a home,
Devereaux says the idea is to merge
the FHT with Healthkick when a
facility is built.
As well, the Healthkick program
which promotes' work placements of
students within healthcare environ-
ments will also use the FHT as a
work placement eventually.
"In time, Healthkick will be with
the FHT all under one roof," she
says.
