shortly after his 50th birthday, how-

standstill.
It wasn't all that difficult to bear,
he says — racing is a recreational
activity for him, and he was able to
continue his business as a race
organizer and promoter.
Still, it was about a year before he
could get back to the sport as a par-
ticipant, and the experience left an
indelible impression on his life.
"It is a life -altering experience, for
sure," he said in an interview last
week. "It certainly makes you re-
think what you're doing and how
you do things.
