Paul Klopp chosen as NDP
candidate for Huron -Bruce
Zurich -area and Blyth farmers vie for candidacy
Ben Forest
argEMEMEMEMO
As members of the Huron -
Bruce NDP Riding
Association gathered in
Goderich on May 17 to select
their candidate for the next
provincial election, , they were
assured a voice that would
make agriculture a top priori-
ty.
Blyth -area cash -cropper
Stephen Webster and Zurich -
area farmer Paul Klopp were
the only two seeking the job,
and agrarian matters were
central to the platforms of
both.
In the end, delegates chose
Klopp to represent them,
marking a significant step in
the former MPP's bid to re-
enter provincial politics.
Klopp spoke first at a nomi-
nation meeting held at the
Huron County Museum, tak-
ing a number of swipes at
opposition parties and posi-
tioning agriculture, labour
and healthcare among his
primary concerns.
He stated in an interview
before the speeches that he
advocates the premium -based
Risk Management Plan
(RMP) as a safety net for
farmers, mortgage programs
and aid to struggling compa-
nies outside the agricultural
sector, as well as a movement
away from privatized health
care.
He accused
the Tories
and Liberals
of edging in
the opposite
direction on
the latter
issue.
Webster
ran on a five -
point plat-
form headed
by physician
recruitment
and followed
by agricul-
ture, rural
infrastruc-
ture, educa-
tion and
shoreline
and water
quality
issues.
He acknowledged in an
interview prior to the speech-
es, that he was more radical
than Klopp, and that he was
the underdog in last week's
race.
"I'll be sur-
prised if I win
tonight," he said.
Webster said
earlier that he
ran because a
number of people
in the riding
asked him to,
and that they
thought he
could make
a difference.
"I don't
need to be a
politician,"
he said. "I
don't want to

Ontario," he said. "We need
members of parliament who
care enough to speak for
rural Ontario."
Webster was gracious in
defeat, presenting a motion
that Klopp's selection be
made unanimous
and saying later
he will cam-
paign for his
opponent.
"It's going to
be a tough rid-
ing to win, but I
think Paul's
going to throw
everything he's
got at it,"
Webster said. "I
congratulate
him and wish
him the very
best."

In his victory
I speech Klopp was
highly critical at the wage
increase recently given to
Ontario MPPs, saying that if
elected he would donate the
extra money from his salary
to charities in Huron -Bruce
until the raise is repealed.
This stands as the first
major promise of Klopp's
campaign, and he seemed
wary of the fact it may sound
like a cheap ploy to garner
votes.
If that's what it sounds like
to others, he insisted, those
others "haven't met Paul
Klopp."
