Tennis lessons courting students from out of town
Aaron Jack 1 i n
More people are coming from outside town to
take tennis lessons at the Seaforth tennis courts
than from Seaforth itself, according to Hank
Binnendyk, who has taught the sport here since
1996.
He says he's getting students from Zurich,
Hensall, Mitchell and Blyth in addition to people
from Seaforth.
"I guess there's nothing else out there," says
Binnendyk.
He expects to have more students this year
than last, but not everyone has signed up yet.
"A lot of people don't want to commit until the
last minute," Binnendyk says.
Binnendyk's early bird program for advanced
adult players is scheduled to start today (May
16), with beginners and advanced classes for
both youths and adults starting after school ends
for the summer.
Last year, Binnendyk had five adult beginner
students, 10 adult advanced students, seven
beginner youth students and eight advanced
youth students.
So far this year, he has eight people signed up
for the early bird program, six beginner adults,
Hank Binnendyk
eight advanced adults, seven beginner youths
and seven advanced youths.
He explains that the advanced students aren't
necessarily experts.
"They know the game, how to keep score, how
to hit the ball and some strategy," he says.
Binnendyk tries to limit each group to eight
players, but will book up to nine on the assump-
tion that one person or another will be missing
each week.
"Any more than that and I'd need another
instructor," he says. "And those are hard to come
Y"
After last year's $9,000 in repairs to the tennis
courts, Binnendyk says they haven't had to do
any maintenance this year.
Binnendyk says that while there were some
more students after the repairs, the increase
wasn't significant.
Fees are higher this year, with the early bird
program at $40, the 10 week adult and kids' pro-
grams at $75 and $70 respectively.
Anyone wanting to use the courts must pay $35
to get a key. When they return the key in the fall,
they'll get $10 -back.
Binnendyk said they only got three keys back
last year. He wasn't sure why since the locks are
changed every year.
