SPS principal, custodial team given
board's 'key contribution' award
Susan Hundertmark
Seaforth Public School's principal and custodial staff
have been honoured with new Key Contribution awards
for working towards the Avon Maitland District School
Board's goals.
Principal Kim Black was recently honoured for con-
tributing towards the first goal of improving student
achievement with a focus on literacy and numeracy
while custodians Bill Price, Gord Dick, Barb Pepper
and Craig Vanderveen were honoured for contributing
towards the fifth goal of using board resources efficient-
ly and effectively.
"The principal always gets the accolades but under
goal one, it had more to do with creating a team that
worked towards student achievement," says Black,
sharing the honour with the rest of the teaching staff at
SPS.
"I'm the lucky one that gets the recognition but we all
deserve to have a piece of this nice
glass award," she says. "My staff
nominated me so I feel even more
honoured."
A press release from the Avon
Maitland board says Black instilled
four beliefs in her staff - that all stu-
dents can achieve high standards
given enough time and support, that
all teachers can teach to high stan-
dards, that high expectations and
early intervention are essential and
that teachers need to articulate
what they do and why.
"As a result of these beliefs and
the tracking techniques Kim has
encouraged her staff to use, student
achievement is continually improv-
ing at Seaforth," sa0 the press
release.
SPS's custodial staff was also nominated by the SPS
staff.
"We did that for our custodians. We love our custodi-
ans. Because of them, we have the prettiest, cleanest
school in the board," says Black.
She says that along with creating a safe and clutter -
free learning environment, the custodians also work
with students to create a positive culture.
"They foster citizenship in our students," she says,
adding that the custodians play ping
pong with students at lunch and
help them learn how to clean up
their own messes.
"They regularly go above and
beyond their job requirements to
ensure that Seaforth Public School is
a safe place to learn and work," says
the board press release.
