Currently on a '5.1 policing system,' Central Huron receives policing as needed and is charged per call. Last November, council looked into contract policing for Central Huron but decided to poll its neighbours as well about sharing policing. Clerk -Administrator Richard Harding said a county -wide policing system could save money and allow municipalities to direct policing to areas of need. He is hoping to receive responses by May 16, and set up a meeting in the near future. =ELM Zi Tennis anyone?... "I know firefighters have been fighting for this for years," says Phillips. "I give the government a lot of credit for protecting us a little bit better. We like to come home in the evening to our families like anyone else," he says. The proposed amendment to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act will compensate firefighters for fire -related illnesses including eight types of cancer and work- related heart attacks, retroactive to 1960. The eight types of cancer include brain, bladder, kidney, colorectal, Non -Hodgkin's lymphoma, leukemia, ureter and esophageal. Heart attacks that occur within 24 hours of a firefighter attending a fire will be presumed work-related. Huron -Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell says in a press release that firefighters deserve compensation for work-related illness. "Firefighters and their families in Huron - Bruce make sacrifices every day to keep Ontarians safe. We're working to make sure our firefighters stay safe and healthy but if they do get sick, we want to make sure they get the support they need," she says in the press release. Mitchell's press release says the legislation covers full-time firefighters and will consult with volunteer firefighters, part-time firefighters and fire investigators to develop the regulations on how the eight types of cancer and heart injury would apply to theses groups. Huron East Fire Chief Marty Bedard says he understands the legislation will apply to volunteer firefighters but he's not sure if anyone locally will be able to benefit right See NEW, Page 2 coLDweLL BAN KeR D NEW LISTING! 18 elen Street 2+ Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms New Roof, many other u 'ates $134,900 Four face charges after break-in, shooting A 25 -year-old Goderich man is suffering from life threatening injuries at London Health Sciences Centre after showing up at Clinton hospital with a gunshot wound in his lower abdomen on Wednesday, May 9 at approximately 10 p.m. Huron OPP report the man received the wound at an attempted break-in at a residence on Beechwood Line in Huron East.
