Council debates how to
spend $170,799 windfall
Susan iiundertin irk
How to spend a $170,779 -wind-
fall from police funding was the
source of debate at Huron East
council May 1.
Deputy -Clerk Brad Knight told
council the municipality received a
credit of $288,193 from the
province to pay for Huron OPP
officers who were sent to other
assignments outside of the county
during the past year.
When subtracted from the $1.026
million Huron East paid for polic-
ing costs in 2006, the municipality
was left with $170,779.
While Knight suggested $41,700
be spent on the municipality's
building study, $29,079 be spent on
asset management and $100,000
be put into building reserves
towards the Brussels library, coun-
cillors had other ideas.
Tuckersmith Coun. Les Falconer
said that with
only $10,000 bud-
geted this year
for road repairs,
some of the
money should go
into road con-
struction.
"I think resi-
dents would be
more interested
in road repair
than in building
libraries," added
McKillop Coun.
Bill Siemon.
Mayor Joe Seili
said that while
he wants to see
Huron East put
aside at least as
much as Morris-
Turnberry has
committed to the
Brussels library,
he would like to
see some of the
money go into
the equipment
reserve.
"We took a
whole lot out of
the equipment
reserve this
year," he said.

Administrator
Jack McLachlan
said that Huron
East has commit-
ted itself to
Huron County to
either bring the
Brussels library
up to standard or
build a new
building and has
received a commitment of 20 per
cent of the total cost from Morris-
Turnberry.
"The architect is coming up with
a design," he said.
Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan
said he wanted to see some of the
money go into general revenues
since other buildings, like the
Vanastra Recreation Centre, will
also need to be replaced in the next
few years.
Brussels Coun. David Blaney
said the money should be put in
the building reserves so it's there
when buildings need to be repaired
or replaced.
"We both know things going into
general revenues have the ugly
tendency to go out of general rev-
enues. If we at least name where it
goes, it won't be siphoned off and
disappear," he said.
Council ended up voting in
favour of the original suggestion
by Knight.
