The closure of Maplewood Manor
in Seaforth has not affected the
availability of retirement home
accommodation in the area, say
administrators of surrounding
retirement homes.
The Seaforth Manor, which was
able to accommodate 14 of the 20
residents looking for a home when
Maplewood closed, still have one
vacancy in its 63 -bed retirement
home, says administrator Cathie
Schalk.
"I would say there's not a short-
age of beds, even with Maplewood's
closure," she says.
Queensway Nursing and
Retirement Home in Hensall was
also able to accept a few former
Maplewood residents and still has
up to four beds available, depending
on whether private or semi -private
rooms are requested.
"Between various local homes, we
were able to absorb the need at the
time. Timing -wise, it was good it
the spring since our busy time is
usually in the fall," says Queensway
administrator Kathy Holdsworth.
She adds that many seniors
choose to stay in a retirement home
during the winter and return home
in the spring.
Queensway has between 40 and
50 retirement home beds in total.
While the Community Care
Access Centre
(CCAC) keeps

home beds,
executive direc-

Coleman says
she's heard no
concerns about
a lack of retire-

accommodation
since
Maplewood's
closure.

Maplewood was a great choice.
We're sorry to see it no longer there
as an option but there's been no
influx of dire need for seniors' hous-

says.
Coleman adds that Maplewood's
closure resulted in more phone calls
about information about services for
seniors, including home care.
"We're always happy to help peo-

says.
