FRANK MCKENNA REMEMBERS THE CARS IN HIS LIFE
By Bill Sherk "The Old Car Detective"
Born in New Brunswick in 1948, Frank McKenna served as Premier
of that province from 1987 to 1997. He also served for several years on
the Board of General Motors and in 2005 was appointed Canadian
Ambassador to Washington. He is now Deputy Chair of TD Bank
Financial Group.
"My father had an old green car like a station wagon. We had ten in
our family and we went to midnight mass with a buffalo robe over us
in the back. We lived on a farm and we also used this vehicle to haul
pigs and sawdust and everything else!"
"In high school, I played a lot of sports, and I bought a Zephyr (an
English -built Ford). I used it for school trips. We had no school buses
so we'd round up four or five cars and put the team in the cars.
"In my third year at university, I worked for the summer in Toronto,
where I fell in love with a red Austin -Healey Sprite. It was so small,
and just as cute as a Labrador pup. I drove it home to New Brunswick
by way of Boston to visit an elderly aunt. The car broke down in the
middle of Harvard Square.
"I'm a farm boy from the Maritimes and Harvard Square was filled
with what we then called hippies. They came over and said: 'Hey, man,
lotta smoke comin' outa the car.' And my aunt was in the car with me.
"One hippie said: 'We'll push you to a garage.' Then another said:
'We'll take the old lady home for ya.' And I said: That's nice.'
"And she said: 'Are you crazy? This is Boston! This isn't the farm!'
So she stayed with me and the hippies pushed us to a garage.
"I was a law student at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia
and I drove my Sprite there. I was president of the Student Union and
I had an office.
"One day, I went looking for my car and it was gone. I went back to
my office to phone the police and there was my car, sitting in my office!
"A bunch of students had carried it into the building and plunked it
down in my office. I had to round up some people to get it out. We still
joke about it to this day.
"Around 1970 I bought a new Volkswagen for $2,274. Several years
later, I was on the Board of General Motors and we had a new vehicle
every three months. At the GM test track in Detroit I also drove
Jaguars and Ferraris and just about every other make so we could
check out the competition. Older members ofour family claim that I
was born in a car in the middle of a snow drift."

Seaforth' Lions
Fishing Derby
draws 147 kids
Aaron Jacklin
The Seaforth Lions shifted the
focus of this year's fishing derby to
giving every kid a prize of some
kind, according to coordinator Paul
Stephen.
"There's nothing worse than see-
ing a disappointed kid," he said.
Every one of the 147 registered
kids got a T-shirt with the name of
the event and the 13 sponsors on
the back.
Stephen said they were down four
kids this year from last year, though
they'd expected another 50 people
with the beautiful weather.
Stephen said 120 fish were caught
during the derby.
