Seaforth boy, 7, reaches $5,000 goal
Fundraising efforts of Ian MacGregor will build two wells in Africa
Susan H u n d e r t m a r k
Seven-year-old Ian
MacGregor and his
Seaforth family have
spent the past year rolling
coins and writing out
receipts and thank -you
cards.
But, one year after
setting a goal to raise
enough money for a well to
be built in Africa, Ian has
raised over $5,000, which
will go towards two spring
wells in the Rukungiri
District of Uganda.
"He had an idea and he
stayed true to it. He really
wanted to do it and people
helped him," says his mom
Trish.
Ian began collecting for
the Ryan's Well
Foundation after hearing
his mom give a sermon
about Ryan Hreljac, a
Kemptville, Ont. boy who
won the Order of Ontario
for his now world-famous
foundation that has built
245 wells in 11 countries.
Ian started out by selling
drinks at his
grandmother's yard sale,
doing chores around the
house and talking to classmates
cause.

And, while he had raised $500 by last November, media
coverage by the Expositor, local television and the United
Church Observer helped spread the news of his cause.
"We thought he couldn't raise $5,000 in a year but we were
wrong and I'm glad," says Trish.
Staff at the Seaforth Medical Clinic raised money for
African wells instead of exchanging Christmas gifts, United
Churches in Kippen and Brucefield jointly raised over
$2,000 and people continued to drop off money at the
MacGregor's home.
"Someone will hand you $5 at the grocery store or the
restaurant and say, 'This is for your son.' People are so
kind," says Trish.
Because Trish's brother-in-law Herb Shoveller is Ryan's
great uncle and wrote a book about Ryan, his foundation
and his relationship with an African boy Jimmy, who is now
Ryan's adopted brother, Ian got a chance to meet Jimmy in
April.
"That meeting really brought the whole thing home for
Ian. Now, he really understands what it's like to live in
Africa and how hard they have to work for their water," says
Trish.
Ian heard from Jimmy how he used to get up at midnight
to walk 10 kilometres to fetch water from his family - a
chore he had to do three times each night to collect enough
water for his family.
"That would be from here to the Vanastra Road for 10
kilometres and he worked from midnight until dawn going
back and forth," says Trish.
"Now, that Ian's met Jimmy, he's talking about wells even
more," she says.
However, the MacGregors are putting an end to active
fundraising for Ryan's Wells at the end of May.
"It's been a good learning experience but we have to get
real again and put some balance back into the MacGregor
household," says Trish of all the work the family put towards
the well project over the year.
"We're not going to walk away completely but we won't be
seeking money actively. And, I sense that Ian is not going to
stop talking about it," she says.
When the two wells are built using Ian's fundraising this
fall, he will be sent a photo of the two.
