Devereaux signs two-year contract with Leafs
Feelings of gratitude, excitement accompany a need to contribute to a winning team

Boyd Devereaux is excited to "get
back out there" with a new $1.5 mil-
lion two-year contract with the
Toronto Maple Leafs.
But, he said he's also feeling the
pressure to prove himself and add
to a winning season next year.
"When the coaching staff sticks
its neck out to sign me, I want to be
able to prove they made the right
decision," he said last Friday, the
day after the contract was signed.
After being a member of the
Detroit Red Wings in 2002 when
they won the Stanley Cup,
Devereaux, 29, said he's excited
about the new regime in Toronto
and its vision of a winning team.
"I want a taste of that (winning
the Cup) in
Toronto. And,
the coaching
staff has all the
right ideas. If I
have a chance to
move it along
with the experi-
ence I have, I'm
excited to do
that. I just want
to win and I
think we're
going to be dan-
gerous," he said.

SPS sends two
teams to annual
recreational tourney
Because of the success of last year's junior recreation-
al basketball tournament at Central Huron Secondary
School, Seaforth Public School was able to send two
teams this year.
And, while no places or medals were assigned at the
fun tournament, Ron Vercruyssen, one of two SPS
coaches, said both teams had a great day. The other
coach was Robyn Carnochan.
While one team won three out of four games, the
other won one out of four. The teams were co-ed and
made up of students in Grades 5 and 6.
"It gives the younger kids an opportunity to work on
their basketball skills and to travel - it's a great experi-
ence for them," he said.
"I'm really proud of my guys - they performed way
above expectation," said Vercruyssen.
He said 40 kids tried out for the teams and 24 were
selected to play. The opportunity to send two teams
increased the number of students with the opportunity
to participate.
