Joan Perrie prepares for another year at Seniors' Games
Aaron Jacklin
With the prediction events of the
Seniors' Games coming up, Joan Perrie
of Walton finds herself preparing in the
pool and out walking.
"A prediction event means that you
say beforehand how long it's going to
take you to do the event," Perrie says.
"The number of seconds or minutes
between your prediction and actual time
is what your score is."
The participant with the lowest score wins.
Perrie says this means that partici-
pants are competing against themselves
as much as anything.
"You practise your walk," she says,
"and one day you're 10 seconds off what
you think you're going to be and the next
day you're two seconds off what you
think you're going to be."

way of testing
yourself
"I practise
swimming my
lengths in the pool
and I time myself.
Hopefully, when
the day comes, I
can be fairly accu-
rate."
Perrie says it's
a way to encourage
exercise as well as
competing against
yourself and, in the
end, others.
Perrie is
preparing for an
eight length swim
and a three km
Walk.
"I'm in the pool
twice a week," she
says, noting she
also walks about
three times a week.

km route that I take when I time
myself," Perrie says, noting that it takes
her about 30 to 31 minutes to complete
it.
The prediction walk will be in
Stratford on May 20. The swim will be in
Vanastra on June 6.
In addition to participating in the
swim prediction, Perrie is also the con-
venor for the event, which means she
organizes the pool rental, welcomes par-
ticipants and explains the rules.
"Unfortunately, we don't have too
many participants this year," Perrie
says.
She suspects that it's the nature of the
activity, pointing out that while many
seniors' clubs may play cards or games
together and can easily organize to par-
ticipate in the corresponding events at
the games, swimming is not often some-
thing seniors do in groups.
The deadline for applications for the
swim event has passed, but Perrie says
interested people can still contact her at
519-887-6182 about signing up.
Perrie is also competing with Ethel
Walker of Bruoefield and Drusilla Leitch
of Egmondville in the triathlon as a team
under the Seaforth Seniors' Club.
Perrie will swim for the team. Both
swims are on the same day in Vanastra.
'I'll swim for the swimming part of it,
and then I have to swim the same dis-
tance again for the
triathlon part of it,"
she said. "I do 16
lengths that day.
Eight lengths for
the swimming and
eight for the
triathlon."
Walker will
walk and Leitch
will bike, during
both events on
June 7 in St.
Marys.
"Phe three of us
go together, we
have lunch and
make a day of it,"
she says.
The trio has
done the triathlon
for the last two
years, winning last
year.
