plan to cycle the equivalent distance this summer to raise money for the Sandra Schmirler

While they can be found on the ice at
Seaforth's Curling Club all winter,
Tommy and Timmy McGrath, of
Seaforth, like to go on long, daily hike
rides all summer.
After curling last winter in a bonspiel
fundraising for the Sandra Schmirler
Foundation, which raises money for neo-
natal units at hospitals across Canada,
the boys decided to raise more money
for the foundation with their cycling.
"We like -to bike and to curl and we
thought the two could go together," says
Tommy.
rI'omrn,y, 13, and 'Timmy, 10, and their
mom Waneeta, enjoy five and 10 -mile
hike rides sometimes three or four times
a day during their summer break.
Timmy came up with the idea of
counting how far they travel while
cycling all summer and getting sponsors
to help them raise money for charity.
Because the family has vacationed in
Sault Ste. Marie - close to 500 miles
away - the boys decided that distance
would be a good goal for their summer
cycling.

New well for
Seaforth
needs one
more series
of tests

A new well proposed for Seaforth's
drinking water needs to go through
one more pump test to make sure
radionuclide levels remain below the
provincial standard.
The well, located on the
Querengesser property the
municipality bought last year and
about 100 yards from the current
Welsh Street well, has been
determined to have a great enough
volume of water.
But, because of a "slight rise" in
radionuclides during initial testing,
engineers will complete another 72 -
hour test.
"The belief is that it will level off
below the level of concern but we're
putting a lot of money into the well so
it's worth the money to pump for
three more days," says Brussels Coun.
David Blaney, who is also the chair of
the Huron East water and sewer
committee.
"There are no guarantees but we
may have gotten through the worst
part," says Blaney.
Huron East council has been
looking for another water source in
Seaforth . since the Chalk Street well
was closed in October of 2002 when
unacceptably high Ievels of
radioactive elements including radon,
radium and uranium were found in
the water.
A month later, the Ministry of the
Environment told Huron East that
Seaforth's only operating well - the
Welsh Street well - needs corrective
action because it is "under the direct
influence of surface water" or a GUDI
well.
Blaney said the well's water has
been found to be hard and high in
minerals such as iron but that it can
