The Mitchell woman and longtime member of the Seaforth Lawn Bowling Club was in Arizona recently bowling in the North American Challenge, her first "assignment" playing for Canada. "It was certainly competitive. We didn't have any easy matches," she says. While there were no medals, both Canadian women's teams won cups and trophies. Carter's team was the overall winner of six games with 18 ends each. "They were long competitions with 18 ends - that's three and a half hours in the hot sun," she says. But, while she was at top form bowling, Carter says an asthma attack shortly before she left for Arizona kept her coughing for most of the tour- nament and scrambling to discover whether any of her med- ications would deem her inelig- ble for play. "That was a lot of pressure won- dering if I could take the drugs I needed," she says. Another chal- lenge during the tournament was the weather. The hot, dry weather made the greens faster than she's used to in Canada but she says she man- aged to adjust to the conditions. And, a huge wind storm with 50 mile an hour winds delayed play during the tournament. While Carter's experience in both provincial and nationals lawn bowling competitions have earned her enough points_ to be considered to represent Canada, she says she's been ambivalent about the travel necessary to com- pete internationally. But, after her trip to Arizona - where she earned four more points towards her eligibility to join the Canadian team - Carter says she'll consider applying to join the Canadians in New Zealand in 2008. "It was nice to think I was repre- senting my country. I am proud to be Canadian and proud of what we accomplished," she says of the Arizona competition. But, whether or not she competes for Canada again, Carter is now eagerly awaiting the start of lawn bowling season in Seaforth after her first experience bowling since last fall. "Now, I'm itching to bowl," she says. submitted photo Carol Carter, at left, bowls in a triples event with Canadian teammates Martha Welsha and Lynn McElroy during the recent North American Challenge in Arizona.
