Seaforth minor ball gearing up
for season with nine teams
Aaron Jacklin
Minor baseball starts soon, with most teams
starting to play the week after the May long
weekend.
"The last week of May, for sure, there'll be
teams playing," said organizer Cindy Windsor.
This year's season will see nine teams
throwing balls and swinging bats at local dia-
monds. Windsor said there will be two coed
pre -mite teams, two coed mites, two coed
squirts, one peewee boys, one peewee girls
and one coed bantam.
"Three of those teams are playing out of the
Winthrop diamond," said Windsor.
There is one less pre -mite team this year
and one more squirt, but that isn't a reflec-
tion of any real increase or decrease in the
number of players.
This change is because kids who played last
year got older.
"They're just moving up a level," said
Windsor. "We still had nine teams last year.
We have nine teams this year."
Windsor said parent support is beneficial,
saying parents interested in helping shouldn't
be afraid to volunteer their time rather than
waiting for the coaches to ask.
"Please be forward and ask if there's any-
thing you can do," added Windsor. "That's
always appreciated."
Minor soccer begins in two weeks
Minor soccer starts in two weeks.
Sandra Melady, who is setting up the travel
teams, says there are two teams again this
year, an under 11 (U11) team and an under
13 (U13).
They'll play on Tuesdays and Thursdays,
starting May 8.
Melady hopes it'll be a good year.
"Last year U11 won the league," she said.
"They're U13 now, most of those kids. So
hopefully they'll have a good turn out."
House league organizer Kim Finlayson says
house league minor soccer will begin soon.
"The season starts on May 9," she says.
"That's the second Wednesday of the month."
She says there will be four junior teams
(under five years), four intermediate teams
(under eight years) and three senior teams
(under ten years) this year.
"What they do every week is have a half
hour practice and a half hour game," says
Finlayson. "We run for an hour every week
and we do a half hour of each. Except for the
wee little guys. They usually only run about
45 minutes because they're too tired."
There's one less senior team this year than
last year. Finlayson isn't sure why
their senior numbers are down, but
guesses the kids may be doing other
things.
House league minor soccer will
run every Wednesday night once the
season starts.
