No local pets affected by pet food scare
Seaforth Vet Clinic receives a lot of phone callsirom worried pet owners

No local pets were affected by the
recent pet food scare, says Dr. Brian
Nuhn of the Seaforth Veterinary
Clinic.
For the past several weeks pet
owners have been carefully watch-
ing the news for the latest on the
recent pet food recalls.
It all started in mid-March when
Menu Foods announced a precau-
tionary recall after pets eating its
food in the U.S. started having kid-
ney problems.
The problem was traced to wheat
gluten from China. A lab in Guelph,
Ont. determined the wheat gluten
had been contaminated with
melamine, which is used in plastics
and agricultural fertilizers in other
countries.
The Seaforth clinic received a lot
of phone calls from worried local pet
owners when the recalls were first
announced.
The number of people calling the
clinic dropped in the last few weeks.
Dr. Nuhn thinks it's because of all
the information available in the
media.
Last week, another recall was
announced of three dog specialty
foods and two cat specialty foods
but Nuhn said he carries neither
one.
"All the suspect foods supposedly
containing contaminated wheat
gluten from China have been
recalled," said Nuhn.
However, this time, he said, the
problem is rice gluten that could be
contaminated.
All the recalled brands came from
Menu Foods. The company also
manufactures foods for other com-
panies.
So many brands have been
recalled that Dr. Nuhn said the clin-
ic has been directing people to the
Menu Foods website for a complete
list of recalls.
"Of all the foods we stock, only one

Medi -Cal Feline Canned
Dissolution Formula - only avail-
able through veterinarians - was
pulled because there was a chance
that one batch had been contami-
nated.
Dr. Nuhn said that the cans they
had weren't suspicious.
"The batch number and date
didn't coincide with the suspect
batch," he said.
He explained that the pet food
companies have been good about
recalling everything where the
smallest chance exists of contami-
nation.
According to Dr. Nuhn, animals
that have gotten sick have suffered
kidney failure.
He says any owner who suspects
their pet may be sick should call
their vet.
"Signs of kidney failure include
decreased appetite, increased thirst
and, in severe cases, vomiting," said
Dr. Nuhn.
