Vacant St. Columban house gutted by fire Aaron Jack 1 i n Fire crews were called to a vacant house in St. Columban at 2 a.m. last Friday. "There were visible flames shooting out the back win- dows," said Marty Bedard, Huron East fire chief and CEMC. Neighbour John Kroonen was getting home from work when he saw the fire. "I thought it was kids setting off fire crackers at first," said Kroonen, who lives nearby. When he looked closer and real- ized it was a fire, he called it in. "I'd barely said `fire' when they asked where I was," he said. 5 Homes Wanted!! A Special Offer for Seaforth and Area Homeowners Only! He answered and was told that someone had already called and crews were on their way. Crews left around 9 a.m., only to be called back that afternoon when a hot spot flared up again. "The fire got up underneath the soffit and fascia boards and asphalt shingles," said Bedard at the scene, explaining that it's difficult to get the fire completely out when that happens. Firefighters were there for just under two hours the second time. The house is gutted by fire. Bedard said the fire started in the kitchen in the back of the house, but that it will be difficult to determine the cause. "The back end is all burnt," Bedard said. "Being a vacant house, nobody was in there so we've got nobody to tell us what happened." Egmondville residents asked to commit to further study of sewers From Page 3 system? I was told by a councillor that it (installing sewers) wouldn't be in my life- time," she said. Seili pointed out that some councillors are not in favour of sewers in Egmondville and added the municipality will not be buying back septic tanks. "I don't know how they're going to deal with it," he said, adding that it will be at least five years before the payment will be required. Another resident expressed the frustration that residents looking at replacing their sep- tic system won't know whether to do so or wait for the sewers. "If the government is serious about the environment, why aren't they subsidizing get- ting rid of the septic systems," he said. One resident asked how the commuppity will know whether faulty septic systetris are impacting the community's health if the municipality chooses not to go ahead with the environmental assessment. Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan said Egmondville has to look at the issue as a com- munity. "If you can't get your neighbour to fix his septic system, you might be in favour (of sew- ers)," he said. "We have anecdotal evidence that it's not the case that everyone has perfectly -working systems," added Potter. Seili said council will decide on what direc- tion to go based on the majority opinion of surveys returned to town hall by May 1, coun- cil's next meeting. 4.%ii+i14it-.. .:i:•ittt,tt►i:;i4.t.4 .i..tft•Sttt►lta.tt•t.lit►i4il4ltf4141tid114IniifCI
