Members of the Huron Family Health
Team (FHT) board, Huron East council
and the Seaforth Community
Development Trust gathered last
Wednesday for a sod -turning ceremony
to mark the intention to build a new
facility for the FHT this fall.
Located on the two and a half acres of
land owned by the development trust,
the new facility will be built beside the
Community Care Access Centre
building and behind the current
Seaforth Medical Clinic and helipad.
"It's about time to get on with it and
show the public the health team is for
real," said Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler,
who is also current chair of the
development trust.
Huron East council and the
development trust finalized a deal
during a closed session at council
Tuesday agreeing to spend
approximately $50,000 a year for the
next 20 years for the new building.
"We set aside $50,000 a year for
healthcare now," said Mayor Joe Seili,
who is also chair of the FHT board.
"And, we're looking at a business plan
that doesn't cost anything," he said,
elaborating that he expects the revenue
generated by the FHT will pay for the
operating costs of the FHT.
Seili said council will hold the
debenture so the FHT's finances
remain open to the public.
He said the first draft of architect's
drawings should be completed by April
27 and should include medical suites,
business offices, a conference room and
a classroom for courses offered by
Georgian College, such as the
registered practical nurse course that
has been offered out of a storefront
building on Main Street for close to two
years.
While the final dimensions of the
building have not yet been determined,
Seili said the lot chosen will provide
plenty of room if expansion is
necessary.
During the next 30 days, Seili said
the FHT board will be looking for
commitments from local doctors for
space at the FHT building.
And, while he hopes to see the
building begin in September "or even
before that," Seili said the FHT board is
still looking for temporary space to rent
while the building is being erected.
