Huron Hurricanes travelling to
Thunder Bay for championships
Jennifer Hubbard
Sixteen local swimmers will be
making a splash in Thunder Bay
this weekend, as the Huron
Hurricanes Aquatic Club partici-
pates in the Division III Team
Championships.
"We were allowed to take a maxi-
mum of 25 swimmers, and original-
ly we were planning on 13,"
Hurricanes coach Wendy Million
explained.
Thanks to the community we've
raised enough for three more swim-
mers to go for a total of 16."
Two Clinton families are among
the 16 Hurricanes competitors.
Sisters Valerie, Correena, Sydney
and Nadine Otten and Kristen and
Nicole VanGalen will be making the
trip.
The team will fly out on April 19
and return home on April 23.
While she's not sure of the final
count, Million said 60 teams were
Scoreboard
invited to the three-day meet, mak-
ing for a challenging competition.
Each swimmer will swim in five
individual events and one or two
relays.
"I have high hopes. A lot of our
swimmers have been working really
hard and I hope to see that pay off
for them as far as times and plac-
ings go," she commented.
"The top two teams will get to
move up to Division II. It's some-
thing we're aiming for in the future,
but not likely to achieve this year."
Swimmers from Hensall and
Goderich will make up the remain-
der of the Hurricanes team, includ-
ing; Sarah Vaessen, Nick Vaessen,
Derick Murray and Scot Ferguson,
all of Hensall, and Goderich's Aiden
Barnett, Emily Bruster, Robert
Norsworthy, Danielle Heinbuch,
Valerie Robinson -Kyle and Rachel
Peet.
Ranging in age from 12 to 19,
Million said the Hurricanes squad
represents a wide range of abilities.

"Regardless of how they do, it'll
definitely be a challenge for every-
one. It's good for them because it
gives them the opportunity of expe-
riencing a higher level of competi-
tion," she said.
Formed in 1990, the HHAC is a
non-profit, independent sports orga-
nization that promotes and teaches
the sport of competitive swimming
in Huron County. The team's roster
for the 2006-07 season features 50
swimmers, ranging from beginner
to competitive.
Nearly half of
