Huronview on the mend

Things are getting back to nor-
mal at Huronview after the del-
uge.
Huron County council heard
April 4, that renovations are near-
ly complete after a Feb. 9 flood,
caused when a sprinkler froze and
burst, forced homes staff to relo-
cate 17 residents.
Homes administrator Barb
Springall reported though there is
still some work to do, many of the
refurbishment efforts are finished.
Springall noted ministry officials
toured the site last week, and they
were pleased with the progress.
She also gave kudos to the coun-
ty's insurance adjuster, Cowan
Insurance of Seaforth, for han-
dling the file in a timely and thor-
ough manner.
"We're quite pleased with the
best of a bad situation," said
Springall, adding Huronview staff
plan to host a ceremony to mark
the wing's reopening once all the
work is completed.
She noted Huronview's chaplain
is staying in contact with resi-
dents who had to find off-site
accommodations as a result of the
incident.
Springall also made note of the
fact Central Huron firefighters
proved extremely helpful during
the flood, which dumped four inch-
es of water in the
100 wing.
She said the
firefighters
helped evacuate
the residents
into the lounge
area. They also
used giant shov-
els to remove
water out the
back door.

Tree planters invited to
join Klaver on Earth Day
Susan Hundertmark

While he's not certain how many
trees he'll have available to plant
on Sunday, Pete Klaver still wants
to celebrate Earth Day by planting
some trees and getting together
like-minded volunteers to plan
future tree -planting projects.
"Spring is the ideal planting sea-
son and I'm hoping we can'have a
meeting of the minds on Sunday,"
he says.
Klaver, who appeared recently
at Huron East council to ask
councillors to learn about global
warming and begin to lead the
municipality in local solutions,
says he plans to go back to council
with more concrete requests for a
number of trees each planting
season.
This Sunday, he is offering a free
tree from a number he's purchased
himself to anyone who joins a com-
mittee to begin planting on the
roadsides of Huron East.
"I've got about a dozen people
interested in doing something so
far. I want to give a tree to whoev-
er shows up ready to plant," he
says, adding that several local
farmers have also expressed inter-
est in having trees planted along
their farms.
Klaver is hoping to model a suc-
cessful 14 -year-old project in West
Nissouri where a handful of local
people have helped to reforest
more than 110 kilometres of road-
side in their township, winning
several environmental awards and
serving as an example for other
municipalities.
Clerk -Administrator Jack
McLachlan says the municipality
will provide 50 trees this year
towards Klaver's project. The
money will come from the public
works budget on top of the 120
trees it was already planning to
plant this year.
"We are looking at ways to sup-
port him and his endeavours,"
says McLachlan of Klaver.
