Huron Bruce Liberals will vote in
a nomination meeting this Friday to
pick a candidate to represent the
party in this riding in the next fed-
eral election.
Nick Whyte, president of the
Huron -Bruce Federal Liberal
Association, says there will be
three candidates to vote on.
They are Mark Kraemer of
Kincardine, Greg McClinchey and
Dr. Maarten Bokhout, both of Blyth.
Mark Kraemer, former three -term
mayor of Saugeen Shores, is the
owner/operator of four businesses in
Saugeen Shores and currently chair
of the Board for Westario Power, a
local electricity distribution compa-
ny that serves a significant portion
of the Huron -Bruce riding. While
mayor of Saugeen Shores Kraemer
was twice elected Warden of Bruce
County.
In announcing his candidacy
Kraemer said, " I believe my busi-
ness experience and my years of
service as mayor and warden have
given me the solid skills that are
necessary to effectively represent
the constituents of Huron -Bruce.
Bokhout, a long-time general
practitioner at Clinton Public
Hospital and former medical officer
of health for Huron County, decided
to seek the nomination after learn-
ing veteran MP Paul Steckle is
stepping down from the political
arena.
"I've always been interested in
politics," says Bokhout. "Paul
Steckle has done a good job of repre-
senting Huron and Bruce counties."
Bokhout predicts the top three
issues for the coming federal elec-
tion will be the environment, which
he calls an "extremely important"
issue, Canada's relationship with
the United States, and healthcare
which, though largely a provincial
issue, will likely end up being part
of the debates.
Greg McClinchey -- Huron -Bruce
MP Paul Steckle's executive assis-
tant for more than 13 years -- was
appointed as a North Huron coun-
cillor in 2006.
"Paul Steckle is a dedicated and
effective MP and I am fortunate to
have had the opportunity to appren-
tice with him for so long," said
McClinchey, who
lives in Blyth
with his wife,
Julie, and
daughter, Mieka.
"For more than
13 years I have
worked both in
Ottawa and
locally with gov-
ernment and
with the Liberal
community,"
McClinchey com-
mented. "I have
endeavoured to
help represent
the interests of
the people of'
Huron -Bruce, be
it at local council
or at the federal
level and I am
eager to contin-
ue with this
work in the
weeks, months,
and years
ahead."
While there
hasn't been an
election date
announced yet,
Whyte says the
Liberals are try-
ing to be pre-
pared for when
it is announced.
"We're working
with a minority
government," he
says, "and when
working with a
minority govern-
ment, you almost
have to be ready
all the time."

larly important
