Carol Carter, of Mitchell, who plays the piano for residents at the Manor, received a 30 -year award. "You get so much out of it. It feels so good," she says. "Sometimes you don't think you have time for it but after you get there and you just play the first song, you get this wonderful feel- ing," says Carter. - Carter moved to the area when she was 19 and has been teaching piano lessons in Seaforth for over 40 years. She was asked to play the piano at the Manor when Mary Finlayson was the activity director there and continued ever since. She plays at strawberry socials, family Christmas events and during a monthly visit. "My mom was in the Manor for 10 years and it was particularly neat to play for the residents then," she says. Twenty-five year awards went to volunteer Hazel McGonigle and res- ident Pat Ryan. McGonigle, of Seaforth, says she's been volunteering at the Seaforth Manor since a cousin had a 50th wedding anniversary there and she helped set up the party. "I was zipping around setting up chairs and a lady there said they could use me as a volunteer," she says. When she first started she said residents were more active, enjoy- ing dances and bus trips. But, since seniors stay in their own homes much longer today, they go into nursing homes when they are more feeble and McGonigle says the resi- dents aren't as active as they once were. "We used to have a lot more par- ties but I still volunteer at bingos and birthday parties and I love helping them out," she says. "I will do it as long as I'm able. The day might come when I need someone to help me," says McGonigle, adding that she'll be 85 this year. Resident Pat Ryan was honoured with a 25 -year volunteer award at the Manor and a five-year award from the Alzheimer Society. His daily volunteer jobs involve greeting new residents, writing let- ters to residents' families, wheeling other residents to their meals in the dining room and writing the lunch and supper menus on the black- board. He's also the caller at the weekly bingo sessions, keeps score at wheelchair bowling and helps out with the weekly euchre session. "I try to keep busy," he says. • Ryan also participates in the Walk for Memories and sells forget- me-nots for the Alzheimer Society. Bill Gibson, of Hensall, received a 15 -year award for playing the piano at the Manor. "I love the old folks and they love it when you play for them. They don't care if you make a mistake," says Gibson. Gibson began his volunteering after cutting and styling hair for residents for years. During his monthly visits he plays golden oldies and some spiri- tual music. "I try to pick out music for the seasons," he says, adding he also Hardwood / A 41A`V.x\ ``, \ `W,\\ OAK 'Flooring= I ( 0 11 sO01AIYI am* TIN N-Y=TAls'W ARENA irX -- Ft- iciaay 4--t3pi-ii, Saturday frccrn 9aani CHERRY MAPLE_ — WALNUT -- FL ORINCI 4v ENGINEERED Tight or Van! Fred and Grace Munnings, of Seaforth, received a five- year award for reading stories and offering Bible studies at the Manor in both the nursing and retirement homes. Grace says Fred began visit- ing a friend and taking a book to read to her. He was told other residents would likely enjoy the stories as well. "He likes going around to visit folks and he got me involved too," says Grace. "Sometimes we have quite a good showing." Out of the sto- ries, the resi- Munnings have begun offering and Bible studies. "We enjoy it," she says.
