SPS inventor, Megan Cardno, wins most original
project at science fair for her bathtub alarm
Susan Hundertmark
Megan Cardno has never liked
waiting around for the bathtub to
fill when she could be spending the
time doing something else.
When given an opportunity to
participate in the recent Avon
Maitland Huron Perth Science and
Inventors' Fair, the Grade 7 student
at Seaforth Public School decided to
try to build an alarm that would let
her know when the bathtub was
full.
"It's kind of annoying having to
stand by the tub and make sure it
doesn't overflow when I could be
doing my homework or playing a
game," she says.
And, she won two awards for the
project - most original project and
one of the top three for Grade 7
innovation.
"Most of the judges were pretty
pleased with the project. They said
they'd never seen anything like
this," says Megan.
Megan spent most of March
Break trying to design a bathtub
alarm.
She says her first attempt was a
simple model involving one piece of
pipe attached to a bell by an elastic
band but both her science teacher
and her dad told her there would
not be enough water pressure to
make the bell sound before the tub
overflowed.
So, she went back to the drawing
board and came up with a more
complex model involving two pieces
of plumbing pipe, some Y fittings,
ping pong balls, one heavier ball,

elastic bands and a bell.
"Since the ping pong balls are
bouyant, they would float up, push
up the heavier ball - which was
attached to the bell with an elastic
band - and it would fall down a sec-
ond tube making the bell go ding,"
she says.
Because she used an old bell that
used to be attached to a door in the

project invention of

ple know when
someone entered
the house, the
bell was not very
loud.
But, Megan
says it can be
heard in the next
room.
"It took four days to work it all
out but it was pretty neat when it
worked," she says.
"Sometimes I thought it would
never work but it paid off in the
end," she says.
Because her project is too big to
keep in a bathtub, Megan says it's
"not really ready to be marketed."
"There is a size problem," she
says.
While science was only her third
favourite subject before the science
fair, Megan says it might be tied for
first now with math.
And, while she says there are
"always ideas in the back of my
head," Megan says she's not sure
yet what she'll create for next year's
science fair.
"I like being an innovator. I just
have to think of something I don't
like to do and find a way to fix it,"
she says.
Megan was one of two SPS stu-
dents to compete in the science fair.
Her classmate Alexandra _Sauk
entered a project on how to make
organic paint.
